This Sunday, we will look at Matthew’s account of the commissioning of the apostles. They were given authority to go into the world and spread the Gospel in word and deed. Two thousand years later, how does this apply to the church? That and more is what we’ll explore this Sunday.

Jesus’ authority is on full display in this week’s sermon text. Jesus calls Matthew, the Publican, he heals a paralytic, he heals a demoniac and raises a woman from the dead. The heart of this passage is that Jesus has incredible authority and with that authority he calls for mercy! Worshipping Jesus, then, should give us incredible freedom! Our merciful savior overcomes the world! Spend some time with week dwelling on the mercy of Jesus towards us.

Matthew begins the next section of his Gospel detailing the redemptive work that Jesus accomplished among the crowds. He healed many diseases, discussed judgement and taught on the cost of discipleship. As you prepare for Sunday, consider this question: What does it cost you to follow Jesus?

Liturgy for Corporate Worship:

Psalm 103:1-8

What a Beautiful Name by Hillsong

Isaiah 53:1-7

Christ Is Enough by Hillsong

How Deep The Father’s Love by The Dispatch

“Not everyone who says ‘Lord, Lord’ will be saved.” This week’s passage of scripture is going to challenge our ideas of salvation. It is very easy to slip into legalism or into a liberty that is free of obeying the commands of Christ. This week, take some time to reflect on the relationship of your works (actions, attitudes, disciplines, habits) to the saving work of Jesus. In other words, what is the foundation of your faith? Let’s be challenged to be free in the Gospel this week and to walk with boldness declaring the goodness and kindness of God towards us in word and deed.

Liturgy for Corporate Worship:

Psalm 31:1-5, 19-24

Holy Holy Holy (God With Us) by Matt Maher

Romans 3:19-25a

Cornerstone by Shane & Shane

And Can It Be by Aaron Keyes

Our God Is Strong by 10,000 Fathers

Deuteronomy 11:18-21

Crying Holy by Aaron Keyes
