Holy Week Daily Devotional | April 6th, 2020

Prayer

Almighty God,
whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reighneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

John 12:1-22
“Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.”

Happy Holy Week,

I know some of you may not have observed (or maybe even heard of) Holy Week outside of Good Friday and Easter Sunday. If you don’t know, Holy Week is a span of eight days stretching from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. This comes at the end of the season of Lent, and it is a great opportunity to slow down and reflect on the most important aspect of our faith: the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This is a good time to slow down and reflect. We are being forced to slow down a bit by this pandemic, after all. Let’s make the most of it, and let’s join this week to acknowledge our need and celebrate the gift of our Savior.

Today, let’s take some time out of our day to meditate on our need. Christ didn’t come because he thought it might be fun. He came because he needed to, because there was no other way. We prove every day, as our ancestors did for centuries, that we are incapable of saving ourselves. Our lives of sin against the Most High God lead us inescapably toward the pit of death. We can’t avoid it. We have a very real need. There is no way we can overcome this obstacle. We are finite beings who have committed an infinite crime against an infinite God. Our only hope is that our God will meet this need. Obviously, he did meet this need. He swooped in with unimaginable grace but let us not forget why he did this. Let us not forget our need.

Lord, we need you!
